Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is set to relocate its European headquarters to Budapest, Reuters reports. This move aligns with the company’s ongoing investments in Hungary, including the construction of a new passenger car factory in Szeged.
BYD Chairman and President Wang Chuanfu and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán made the announcement during a joint press conference on Thursday.
This new regional headquarters in Budapest is expected to create approximately 2,000 jobs and serve as a central node for BYD’s European operations. The facility will house regional sales, after-sales services, testing, and the development of EU-specific vehicle models.
EUR 4 Billion Investment in Szeged Factory
BYD is simultaneously building its first European passenger car manufacturing plant in Szeged, southern Hungary. Representing an estimated EUR 4 billion investment, the facility spans nearly 300 hectares and is projected to produce up to 200,000 vehicles annually.
Production is set to begin in the second half of 2025, with two core models confirmed for the assembly line: the BYD Dolphin, a compact hatchback, and the BYD Atto 3, a popular compact SUV tailored to European preferences.
Hungary is emerging as a central node in Europe’s electric vehicle supply chain. In addition to BYD, major global players such as BMW and China’s CATL are developing facilities in the country.
