Hungarian students scored below the Central European average in this year’s IT Fitness Test, a digital skills survey completed by a record 150,000 participants from the Visegrád Four countries and Ukraine.
They performed best in IT security, achieving a 66% success rate, most identified phishing attempts and understood password safety. Their weakest area was office software, with only 41% correct answers in word processing and spreadsheets.
This pattern mirrors regional results: strong cybersecurity awareness but limited proficiency with productivity tools. Nationally, Hungarian primary students averaged 55.3%, while secondary and university students reached 50.2%, both slightly below the regional averages.
Within Hungary, results varied sharply. Students in Western and Central Transdanubia performed best, while those in Northern Hungary and the Northern Great Plain regions faced greater challenges, a gap of roughly 20% between top, and bottom, performing areas.
The initiative, coordinated in Hungary by the IVSZ – Association of Digital Enterprises, aims to map and strengthen digital competencies. In total, 90 primary and 76 secondary schools and universities in the country joined the effort, where students solved practical tasks involving everyday PC use, cybersecurity, and digital communication.
