Conscious consumers worldwide are spending more on organic food and drinks than ever, pushing the global market to a record high. In 2024, total retail sales of organic food and beverages climbed 3.5% to €145 billion.

The largest single organic market remains the United States at €60.4 billion, followed by the European Union (€49.5 billion), Germany (€17 billion), and China (€15.5 billion). Switzerland led global per capita consumption with €481 per person, surpassing Denmark as the top market share holder, with organic food now accounting for 12.3% of all food sales.

Europe’s organic market strengthens

Across Europe, the organic sector grew by 4.1%, reaching €58.7 billion in retail sales. Germany remained the region’s leader, while France and Italy followed closely with €12.2 billion and €5.2 billion, respectively.

According to fresh figures from the international organic yearbook, Hungary recorded a striking 13.9% growth in retail organic turnover between 2023 and 2024, second only to Luxembourg’s 20.2% surge within the EU.

While demand continued to grow, global organic farmland remained steady at 98.9 million hectares, with 4.8 million organic farmers worldwide. Australia still leads in total organic area (53 million hectares), whereas tiny Liechtenstein holds the highest share of organic farmland relative to total agricultural land (43.5%).
