The 32nd Budapest Pride march will take place on May 22, 2027, moving from its traditional late-June schedule after extreme heat affected this year’s event, which attracted an estimated 50,000 participants.

The decision, announced on October 27, follows the 31st Budapest Pride on June 27, 2026, when temperatures in the Hungarian capital approached 40°C, according to local news outlet 444.hu.

Organisers said the heat placed considerable strain on participants, volunteers and event staff, prompting a review of the traditional summer schedule. The decision to move the 2027 event to May was made in September.

Budapest Pride attracted an estimated 50,000 participants in 2026

Despite the difficult weather conditions, organisers estimated attendance at approximately 50,000 people during the June 2026 march, according to Telex and HVG. The procession travelled from the Hungarian State Opera to Vérmező park, with 19 vehicles and representatives of 40 civil society organisations, community groups and supporting businesses taking part.

The event received public support from 35 embassies and cultural institutions. Budapest Mayor Gergely Karácsony was among the speakers at the concluding programme. Organisers also introduced measures to address the heat, including selecting shaded streets and providing additional access to drinking water.

The 2026 attendance figure was substantially below the extraordinary turnout recorded in 2025, when organisers estimated that between 350,000 and 400,000 people joined the 30th anniversary march amid a dispute over government restrictions on the event.

Three-week festival to begin with the May 22 march

The revised 2027 programme reverses the traditional sequence of Budapest Pride events. Previously, the march typically marked the conclusion of the community festival. Next year, the May 22 procession will serve as the opening event, followed by three weeks of cultural, community and professional programmes.

Organisers said the new schedule is intended to improve conditions for participants and volunteers while maintaining the event’s role as a major gathering for Hungary’s LGBTQ community.

Budapest Pride has traditionally taken place towards the end of June, close to the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York, a landmark in the modern LGBTQ rights movement.
