Budapest Airport is on track for another record-breaking year after welcoming 7.6 million passengers during the first five months of 2026, while cargo volumes continued to post double-digit growth.

The operator of Ferenc Liszt International Airport reports passenger traffic reached 1,822,483 travellers in May, representing a 7.1% increase compared with the same month last year. The result lifted total passenger numbers for the January-May period to approximately 7.6 million.

Among the most popular destinations served from Budapest in May were London, Paris and Milan. Passenger traffic also received a boost from the UEFA Champions League Final, which was held in Budapest at the end of the month and attracted thousands of international visitors.

Cargo volumes maintain double-digit growth

Budapest Airport handled 41,398 tonnes of cargo in May, an increase of 11.7% compared with the same period of 2025. During the first five months of the year, cargo throughput reached 188,457 tonnes.

The growth reflects Budapest’s increasing importance as a regional air freight hub, benefiting from expanding e-commerce activity, stronger trade links between Europe and Asia, and continued investment in logistics infrastructure.

Expansion plans signal long-term ambitions

Airport operator Budapest Airport and majority owner VINCI Airports have launched a €1 billion development program that includes the construction of a new terminal complex designed to accommodate future passenger growth and enhance operational capacity.

The investment follows a record 2025, when the airport handled nearly 20 million passengers, cementing its position among the fastest-growing airports in this part of Europe.
