French sporting goods retailer Decathlon will invest HUF 750 million (around €2 million) to open a new store in Budapest, marking the company’s first expansion of its Hungarian retail network in nearly a decade.
The new 2,000-square-metre store will be located at the Tesco shopping centre on Bécsi Road in Budapest’s District III (Óbuda), one of the capital’s fastest-growing residential areas. The opening date has not yet been announced.
Budapest remains central to expansion strategy
According to the company, the decision to invest in a new Budapest location reflects both the continued expansion of Hungary’s sports retail market and rising consumer demand for affordable, family-oriented sporting activities.
Decathlon said accessibility and proximity to customers were the primary considerations when selecting the Óbuda location, with the Budapest metropolitan area remaining a strategic priority for future growth.
The new store will offer the full omnichannel experience, including access to the company’s complete product catalogue, click-and-collect services and in-store specialist support, as 43% of Decathlon’s Hungarian customers shop through both online and offline channels.
New jobs alongside retail expansion
The Decathlon Óbuda store is expected to employ around 30 people. Some positions will be filled internally, while the majority of recruitment will focus on hiring new sports advisors. The company currently employs approximately 1,400 people across Hungary.
Strong financial performance for Decathlon in Hungary
Decathlon has operated in Hungary for 21 years and currently manages 24 stores nationwide. Its Hungarian subsidiary generated HUF 92.3 billion (over 250 million euros) in net revenue during 2025.
