PENNY is investing HUF 13.5 billion to expand its logistics centre in Alsónémedi, south-east of Budapest. The project will add 14,500 square metres to the existing facility over almost two years, taking its total floor area to 52,500 square metres.

Once completed, the Alsónémedi site will become PENNY’s largest logistics centre in Hungary, giving the retailer additional capacity to support the expansion of its nationwide store network.

The investment comes as the retailer prepares for a more complex operating environment, with demand for fresh products increasing, the product range expanding and the Hungarian network approaching 250 stores.

The refrigerated warehouse area will double as part of the project, giving the retailer greater flexibility in managing fresh products and enabling more precise distribution across its stores.

From 200 trucks a month to 5,500

When the logistics centre first opened, around 200 trucks per month passed through the facility, carrying approximately 6,000 pallets of goods. Today, the site handles more than 5,500 trucks and approximately 150,000 pallets every month.

PENNY currently operates 247 stores and three logistics centres in Hungary and employs more than 5,000 people nationwide. Alsónémedi hub expansion will support its future network development and enable the logistics centre to supply 58 additional stores.

Thirty years of PENNY in Hungary

The logistics expansion coincides with a major anniversary for PENNY. The retailer opened its first Hungarian discount store in Szentes on June 6, 1996, a store that is still operating today. The Alsónémedi logistics centre itself is almost as old as PENNY’s Hungarian operation.
