Hungary’s used-car market kept its momentum in March, with inquiries on Használtautó.hu exceeding 453,000, a record for the platform, and listings topping 110,000, both figures higher than a year earlier, as buyers shifted toward electric and hybrid models while diesel searches fell sharply.
Petrol cars remain the most popular powertrain, but interest in EVs and hybrids continues to grow while diesel demand has dropped by more than 20,000 searches compared with last year.
The average purchase price climbed to HUF 5.5 million from HUF 4.9 million a year ago, the average age dropping to 12.56 years from 13.16 years, and mileage falling to 171,000 km from 181,000 km. Hatchbacks led demand, followed by SUVs, which saw searches rise nearly 20% to about 95,600, while station wagons held steady and sedans lost ground by 9%.
Electric vehicles edged cheaper on average to HUF 10.2 million from HUF 10.3 million, while petrol, diesel and hybrid prices all increased to HUF 4.7 million, HUF 4.9 million and HUF 10.7 million, respectively.
Station wagons posted the biggest price gain at 16% to HUF 5 million, followed by sedans at 13%, hatchbacks at 10% and SUVs at 2%, reflecting how buyers are trading up for SUVs and newer models across the board.
The shift away from diesel also mirrors broader trends, with Hungary’s new-car BEV share at 8.5% in 2025 and hybrids gaining ground as petrol and mild hybrids still dominate at over 70%.
