Hungary’s used-car market is on track for another record year, with 652,000 domestic transactions recorded in January-August 2026, up 5.6% from 617,100 a year earlier, according to preliminary DataHouse figures cited by JóAutók.hu.
In August alone, 79,100 used passenger cars changed ownership, an increase of 8.3% year-on-year. The traditional August slowdown was also much weaker than normal: turnover was only 3.3% below the average of the preceding months, compared with a 6% seasonal decline last year.
Used-car imports jump above 104,000
A total of 104,300 imported used passenger cars were registered in Hungary during the first eight months, up 25.5% from 83,100 in the same period last year. August imports approached 13,000 units, more than 30% higher year-on-year.
Detailed DataHouse figures put August imports at 12,980 vehicles, compared with 9,974 a year earlier. More than 43,000 used cars entered Hungary during the three summer months, a 37% increase from summer 2025.
However, imports are not necessarily rapidly rejuvenating Hungary’s ageing vehicle fleet. Only 13% of imported used cars this year were less than five years old, while 53% were at least ten years old. Hungary’s passenger-car fleet had an average age of 16.5 years at the end of 2025, up from 16.2 years a year earlier, according to the Hungarian Central Statistical Office.
Volkswagen overtakes Opel
Volkswagen accounted for 65,700 transactions, or 10.1% of sales, in the first eight months, overtaking long-time leader Opel, which recorded 64,700 transactions and a 9.9% market share.
Suzuki ranked third with 7.9%, narrowly ahead of Ford at 7.8%. BMW accounted for 6.2% of transactions and Toyota for 6%. Together, the six brands represented around 48% of Hungary’s used-car transactions.
Volkswagen is even more dominant in the import segment. It accounted for 12.8% of imported used vehicles earlier this year, with the Golf and Passat among the most frequently imported models. Ford followed with 8.5%, Opel with 7.9%, Audi with 6.7% and Toyota with 5.8%.
Average asking price holds around HUF 5.5 million
Separate August data published jointly by KSH and Használtautó.hu put the average asking price at HUF 5.52 million, only slightly above HUF 5.50 million in August 2025.
Around 35% of advertised cars cost less than HUF 2.5 million, another 28.8% were priced between HUF 2.5 million and HUF 5 million, and 23.2% between HUF 5 million and HUF 10 million. Only 13.1% were listed above HUF 10 million.
Hybrid listings increased 45.6% year-on-year, while the number of advertised electric cars rose 2.7%. Hybrids had an average asking price of HUF 10.56 million and battery-electric cars HUF 11.42 million in August.
