Taxi rides in Budapest will be more expensive from August 1, after the Hungarian capital approved its first fare increase in more than two years, citing higher operating costs and persistent inflation affecting the transport sector.
The Budapest Municipal Assembly voted to amend the city’s regulated taxi pricing system, raising the base fare to HUF 1,300, while the per-kilometre tariff will increase to HUF 521 and the per-minute waiting charge to HUF 130.
The proposal was approved with 19 votes in favor, while 10 councillors abstained. The adjustment marks the first revision of Budapest’s official taxi tariffs since March 2023.
Around a 10% increase
The revised pricing represents an increase of roughly 9-10% across the regulated fare structure. Budapest maintains a regulated taxi market, meaning licensed operators are required to charge fixed city-approved fares rather than setting prices independently.
New airport surcharge introduced
Alongside the fare increase, the municipality also approved a new HUF 800 surcharge for journeys to and from Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport. The surcharge will apply in addition to Budapest’s standard regulated taxi tariff.
