Physical media is seeing renewed demand on Hungary’s second-hand market, with vinyl records, music CDs and DVD films among the most frequently purchased formats on Vatera in 2026, according to data released by the online marketplace.
Vatera’s transaction data for the first seven months of 2026 shows that DVD films and music CDs generated the highest number of transactions among physical media categories, followed by vinyl records. One transaction can include several items or an entire collection.
Vinyl dominates the most expensive music sales
Vinyl records accounted for 60% of the 20 highest-priced music releases sold on Vatera so far this year. CDs represented another 25%, while prerecorded cassette tapes accounted for the remaining 15%.
Among the higher-value vinyl sales were releases by Napoleon Boulevard and Pink Floyd, while collectible CDs included Kispál and Guns N’ Roses. Bonanza Banzai demos and Kaláka albums appeared among the most valuable cassette transactions.
The marketplace also reports demand for older playback hardware. Walkmans and Discmans change hands more frequently on Vatera than iPods, reflecting the historically lower penetration of Apple’s portable music player in Hungary.
Second-hand gaming market worth several billion forints
Physical games are another important category for Hungary’s resale market. Vatera estimates the domestic second-hand gaming market at several billion forints annually. Physical games can be resold between users, unlike digital licences tied to online accounts, giving older discs and cartridges an established second-hand market.
In 2026 so far, the highest number of gaming transactions on the platform involved PC, Nintendo and Xbox 360 titles, followed by games for PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4.
Box sets and discontinued films remain popular
Demand also remains strong for films on DVD and Blu-ray. Vatera says collectors are particularly interested in box sets, complete television series and anniversary editions, including collections such as Mad Max, Harry Potter and Game of Thrones.
Part of the demand comes from titles that are no longer commercially available after distribution rights expire, leaving the second-hand market as one of the few ways to obtain particular editions.
Vatera has more than 2 million users
Vatera, operated by Big2 Platform Kft., has been active in Hungary since 2000. The marketplace now has more than 2 million users, who complete several hundred thousand successful transactions each month.
