Domestic tourism in Hungary remained resilient in 2025, with Lake Balaton once again emerging as the country’s most popular destination, according to data released by accommodation booking portal Szallas.hu.

Based on bookings made last year, 22% of all domestic reservations targeted the Lake Balaton region. Northern Hungary followed with 18%, while Budapest and its surrounding area ranked third with 12% of total bookings.

Western Transdanubia and the Southern Great Plain completed the top five destinations, albeit with a noticeable gap behind the leaders. The Northern Great Plain captured 9% of bookings, while Southern Transdanubia accounted for 8%, placing sixth and seventh respectively.

Short stays and moderate budgets dominate

Affordability remained a defining feature of domestic travel last year, as 56% of domestic bookings were worth no more than HUF 70,000, while an additional 31% fell between HUF 70,000 and HUF 170,000.

Only 8% of bookings reached the HUF 170,000–270,000 range, and less than 5% exceeded this level. Payment preferences also reflected domestic patterns: almost 27% of online bookings were paid using SZÉP cards.

One- and two-night trips remain the norm

Hungarians largely favored shorter breaks in 2025. One or two-night stays accounted for 70% of all domestic bookings, according to the portal’s summary. Bookings for three nights represented 17%, while four-night stays made up 8%. Longer trips remained rare: only 3% of bookings were for five nights, and just 2% lasted six nights or more.

Hotels still lead, but alternative accommodation remains strong

31% of bookings were made at hotels, with three- and four-star categories proving the most popular. At the same time, apartments accounted for 29% of bookings, followed by guesthouses at 21%. Bed and breakfast accommodations represented 13%, while other lodging types made up the remaining 6%.

Couples drive demand

Traveling in pairs remained the most common choice: every second booking was for two people in 2025. Groups of three accounted for 14%, four-person bookings reached 13%, while 10% involved five or more travelers.

Among the most visited sites were Zalakaros Bath, Hungarospa Hajdúszoboszló, and the Sárvár Thermal and Wellness Bath, alongside iconic cultural attractions such as Eger Castle, Festetics Castle in Keszthely, or the Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden.
