FlowSolar has commissioned a HUF 823 million hybrid solar and energy-storage facility in Ganna, western Hungary, deploying vanadium redox flow battery technology designed for longer-duration storage.
The project combines a 0.5 MW solar installation with a 0.5 MW/2 MWh storage system, allowing the battery to deliver its rated output for about four hours. The investment received HUF 67 million in non-refundable European Union funding.
Four-hour battery targets solar generation shifts
Unlike the lithium-ion technology used in most current battery projects, vanadium redox flow batteries store energy in liquid electrolytes held in external tanks. The technology allows power and storage capacity to be scaled separately and is designed for repeated long-duration cycling.
The technology deployed at Ganna is expected to have an operating life exceeding 30 years, according to information released around the project, as Hungary has already tested similar technology.
A solar-linked vanadium redox flow installation inaugurated at Öskü in 2024 was described by Hungary’s National Research, Development and Innovation Office as the country’s first project of its kind. That system was designed for six-hour discharge and an operating life extending beyond 25 years.
Ganna forms part of wider storage portfolio
Ganna is one of several solar-and-storage projects associated with the Ceedar investment platform. Its published portfolio also includes projects in Veszprém, Söpte, Dunaföldvár and Veszkény, combining photovoltaic generation with battery storage.
