A former Budapest bus terminal has found a very different second life. McDonald’s has opened a new flagship restaurant in the historic Terminal building on Erzsébet Square.
The new restaurant combines preserved features of the former bus terminal with McDonald’s “Cube” interior concept, a design approach that the company says is being introduced in Hungary for the first time.
From bus terminal to McDonald’s
The Erzsébet Square bus terminal opened in 1949 and remained an important part of Budapest’s intercity bus network for more than five decades. The terminal officially stopped handling long-distance buses in October 2001, as bus traffic was gradually moved to newer transport hubs outside the city centre.
The building itself survived the closure. Designed by István Nyíri, an architect who received the Ybl Prize, the terminal building had already received heritage protection in 1977, decades before its transport function ended.
Its subsequent history has been almost as varied as its original purpose. The building later housed Design Terminal, while the surrounding complex has also been used for hospitality and events.
Keeping the clocks, adding the Cube
Rather than completely replacing the building’s visual identity, McDonald’s preserved several of its most recognizable elements. Among them is the wall featuring clocks displaying local times in cities around the world, together with the distinctive central clock and other architectural details associated with the former bus terminal.
These historical elements have been incorporated into McDonald’s new Cube interior concept. The concept takes inspiration from the experience of opening a Happy Meal box, using geometric forms, warm colours and design details referring to McDonald’s signature smile.
A custom wall graphic inside the restaurant also tells the story of Erzsébet Square and the building, highlighting key moments in the site’s history and its changing role as a community space.
McDonald’s bets on distinctive locations
For McDonald’s Hungary, the Terminal restaurant is also part of a strategy of developing locations that are different from the standard roadside or shopping-centre restaurant. as the company already operates restaurants in other distinctive Budapest locations, including Régiposta Street and Nyugati Square.
