Hungary’s famed Tokaj wine region has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Wine Regions in Europe for 2025, standing alongside iconic destinations such as Rioja, Tuscany, and Bordeaux, Visit Hungary reports.
Located in the country’s northeast, Tokaj is celebrated not only for its legendary Tokaji Aszú, historically known as the “wine of kings, king of wines”, but also for its unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty.
Designated as a UNESCO Cultural Landscape, Tokaj preserves centuries-old cellars, traditional settlements, and terraced vineyards. Visitors can explore the underground cellars of Hercegkút, discover wine-making traditions at the Tokaj Wine Museum, or enjoy vinegar tastings at the historic manufactory in Bodrogkeresztúr.
The region is home to some of Hungary’s most prestigious wineries, including Royal Tokaji, Oremus, Sauska, and Disznókő. Each estate offers distinctive tastings, from elegant dry blends to the famed sweet Aszú, making every visit a cultural and sensory journey.
Tokaj’s appeal extends far beyond its wines. History lovers can explore the medieval Sárospatak Castle, the baroque synagogue in Mád, and the dramatic Füzér Castle, known for knightly tournaments and festivals.
Outdoor enthusiasts can hike the Megyer-Hegy Tarn, try dragon boating on the Bodrog River, or take on the alpine coaster and record-breaking suspension bridge at Zemplén Adventure Park.
